The HRDGA is a collection of Holly Ridge Baptist members (mostly youth) who have discovered the sport of Disc Golf. Membership into this elite group is free and open to anyone who wants to give disc golf a try. The reason for the group is to provide our youth, and anyone else who wants to play, a chance to participate in a fun activity that encourages fellowship outside of regular church time. The game provides a very casual atmosphere where people can just be themselves and build relationships. Randy introduced the group to the sport one afternoon when the youth were out of school. He learned the sport while serving as Youth Pastor at Eastside Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. The Rock Hill area is home to the Winthrop Course, which is home to the United States Disc Golf Championship. While in Rock Hill Randy had the privilege of playing with two time world champion, Harold Duvall, who is also a fine Christian.
By now you are probably wondering, "What is Disc golf?" It is a sport much like golf that uses flying disc (not Frisbees) instead of balls and clubs. The object of the game is to get your disc into the basket in the fewest number of throws possible. The disc used consist of drivers for long throws, approach disc for medium length shots, and putters for short throws at the basket. Playing disc golf is a great way to have fun and fellowship while getting a little exercise in at the same time. Anyone can play, and no special skills are required other than being able to throw a disc. Disc golf is actually played professionally with tournaments taking place for all levels of play. For more information check out the Professional Disc Golf Association website.
There are many course around the Greenville area, but our home course is the 18 hole, 9 basket course at Simpsonville City Park. We also play behind Randy's house, using his three portable "disc catcher" to make up a custom nine hole course. Other area courses include Timmons Park, Holmes Park Disc Golf Course, and Gower Park. There are also course spread throughout the state and country.
In order to make things more interesting we now have a "HRDGA Bag Tag" available free of charge for all members. The bag tag has a number on it along with the HRDGA logo and the Plan of Salvation. The way this works is that every member has a tag and the object is to have the lowest number tag. A person with a higher number can challenge a person with a lower number to a match and if the person with the higher number wins, the members must switch tags. These tags can be a great conversation starter out on the course and can open up doors to share the gospel. See Randy to get your tag.
